I’m starting this entry on Thursday and we are set to fly out tomorrow at 6 p.m. So today I will pick up from our last entry and catch you up on what we’ve been doing while here in the Phoenix area. We’ve been winding down, but not completely, so we still have a few stories to tell . . . We used Sunday as a day to rest, relax, and recharge our batteries. That evening we joined Uncle Bob, Aunt Joan, Karen, and Kelly at a Tuscan restaurant called Sassi’s to celebrate Aunt Joan’s birthday. It was a beautiful place with Old World style surrounded by views of the desert and nearby Pinnacle Peak. We had a great time visiting over three courses of delicious Italian dishes. That takes us to Monday, when we ... read more

The POD for Thursday: drive from Zion to the north rim of the Grand Canyon, spend a few hours there, and then head east to Page, Arizona, just alongside Lake Powell and the Glen Canyon Dam. Not so much drama this day, but plenty of beauty to behold . . . To exit Zion Park we drove back through the way we had come in, once again marveling at the sights and stopping to take a few last pictures. Then we headed south to the North Rim. When we made a pit stop about 45 minutes from our destination, we were happily greeted by much a milder temperature. Then we started down the long road that takes you to the north rim entrance. The landscape here was much different than at the east or south ... read more

Angel's Window

We started out our day of hiking and sightseeing at Zion Park mildly enough. We boarded the shuttle and got off to view the Three Patriarchs--Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. After that we hopped on the Emerald Pools trail, and hiked the entire 2 miles and enjoyed viewing all three of the lower, middle, and upper pools. That was considered a moderate trail with an ascent of 150 ft. We managed that trail fairly easily even though we began to get some rain sprinkles on our way back down. We were debating whether or not to attempt the much more strenuous Angel’s Landing trail (2.5 mile, 1,500 ft. ascent), but the overcast weather had us a little worried. The lodge attendants were discouraging any of the longer trails and the forecast was calling for a 30% ... read more

I said in our last post that Tuesday would be a marathon day on the road, and boy, was it ever! We were up early once again, this time to head off to Bryce Canyon National Park in southern Utah. The visitor center greeter recommended we take the more scenic route through Cedar Breaks instead of using Highway 20, which normally is a little quicker. Apparently the fires further north were causing some traffic to be rerouted onto 20, leading to possible slow-downs. By then our stomachs were calling, so we stopped at a Cracker Barrel, where we also realized we had lost an hour due to the time change. We were quickly getting behind schedule, but Cedar Breaks National Monument enticed us into making stop anyway. We were at an elevation of about 10,000 ... read more

Just Kidding! We weren’t there long enough to get into too much trouble, so here’s the scoop on our 18 hours in Vegas. We arrived at our hotel, the Excalibur, around mid afternoon. The hotels on our corner were pretty entertaining to look at; the other three were the New York, New York, they MGM, and the Tropicana. We spent some time just walking around, checking out the surroundings. All of the casino areas in these four hotels were pretty much the same—loud, flashy, and busy. Just for the heck of it we blew a few bucks in the slot machines. At the NY, NY we strolled Central Park, shared a slice of pizza and a smoothie, and laughed and screamed our way through the roller coaster. That evening we met our friends Joe and ... read more

Hi Folks, As I’m composing this, we are on our way away from the Grand Canyon, heading toward Las Vegas. Thanks to us needing gas, we had a nice little surprise this morning when we stopped in Williams to gas up and have breakfast. Williams is about 1 hour south of the Grand Canyon south exit, and it is home to the Grand Canyon Railroad. Williams sits on Route 66 and has lots of old-timey western charm. We had a wonderful breakfast at a cute restaurant filled with local artists' paintings of cowboys on the range, the Grand Canyon, and Native Americans. So now we can add historic Route 66 to our list of places visited. What can I say about the Grand Canyon! Those of you who’ve been there know--there is no way to ... read more

Hi again! Today we stayed close to Phoenix, since we have the big trip to the Grand Canyon tomorrow. We enjoyed a workout at the gym here at the Rio Verde clubhouse, and then we went to Saguaro Lake, about 30 minutes outside of Phoenix. It is one of four manmade lakes created by the damming of the Salt River. It is 10 miles long and a popular place for boaters. We took a 90 minute boat tour. From our guide we learned how to identify some of the different species of cacti, how to distinguish between mesquite, ironwood, and palo verde trees, but as for animials, the guide kept saying, " . . . and here is where we would see such and such animal, but it's probably too hot today . . ." ... read more

Yesterday we drove from Rio Verde into the Tonto National Forest and up to the town of Payson, about an hour north of here. In Payson we found an all-terrain mountain buggy trip to take. Our guide was Charlie, and he took us on quite an adventure. We met Charlie in a parking lot in town, and followed him to a remote location in the mountains. Here we were following a complete stranger and hoping it wouldn't turn out to be like a scene out of Deliverance. . . as it turned out Charlie was a nice Christian guy who showed us all kinds of neat things, and our only "danger" turned out to be from the weather. The trip's first highlight was a jaunt onto a rough and rocky off-road trail. From there we ... read more

Hi everyone! We made it to Arizona yesterday. All of our travels went very smoothly. The visibility on our flight was great almost the whole time. It was really neat to watch the landscape change so much from piedmont to mountains, to plains, and then desert. Our greeting and brunch with Aunt Joan and Uncle Bob was delightful and delicious. Afterward Aunt Joan was a wonderful tour guide, showing us around Fountain Hills and Rio Verde, where their condo that we are staying in is located. Uncle Bob joined us later at Rio V., as he was busy with the AC repairman, and we couldn't blame him for wanting to get that straight, seeing as the temperature was 116! Aunt Joan must have done a good job on our tour, 'cuz we managed to find ... read more
