Later that day we caught the bus to Stung Treng. Stung Treng lies on the Mekong River further north, and is a very popular way of either crossing between Laos and Cambodia. Unforunately, not many tourists chose to spend any time in Stung Treng, which is actually not fair, seeing that it is a vey charming town. However, a pretty tight schedule didn't leave us much time to enjoy the town, or so we thought. We arrived quite late, and of course were greeted by several guest house representatives touting their guest house. We decided to follow one guy to his guest house, but were rather disapointed with the standard of the place. Yes, it was very cheap (US$3) but it was dark, dirty, and musty. When I pointed out the squat toilet to the guy, ... read more

Kim and me have talked about going for a holiday in Cambodia for ages now, and since my contract ended now we decided it would have to be now or never. So, off we went. Our first leg would be the North-East of Cambodia to see the mountains, and then back to Phnom Penh for a night, and then on down south to see the sea. First stop would be Kratie, which is a pretty boring town with 30 000 citizens, but because one can see the infamous Mekong Dolphins there we decided to stay the night. The busride up there was pretty uneventful an quite long, seven hours for 300km. We met a rather nice chap from Austria on the bus, and the three of us decided to find a guest house together. One of ... read more

Khmer weddings are a rather mystified affair. To me, it doesn’t seem like the bride and groom can get much fun out of the wedding. Apparently there is a whole two-day ceremony which I have never been to, however, I have been to the celebration which can be good fun. When you arrive the bride and groom, plus all the bridesmaids and best men and an assorted selection of the family, will stand in a row in the entrance, greeting each guest separately and give them some small present like a key ring (very often a key ring, in fact I have never received anything but key rings). Since there is no set time for when the celebration is to start, and guests are encouraged to just pop in at whatever time suits them the best, ... read more

Well, it's been a long time since my last blog, but don't be peeved, you haven't really missed much. Anyway, here are pictures from my stay here, or at least from the last time my camera got nicked. Now, my camera has only got nicked, but that doesn't mean it can't be nicked again. Unfortunately, in this country having any kind of possession is a bit like a Russian roulette. Most of the time you are lucky and all your possessions are still yours, but that doesn't mean that you don't know that given enough time someone will eventually lighten you of some of your worldly possessions. The upside of this is that you don't really get too attached to mere things. Although I reckon that Buddha didn't really have theft in mind as a way ... read more

It has been an interesting last month, filled with both good and bad experiences. Mostly bad though, but as they say, whatever doesn't kill you, makes you stronger. First I broke up with my Khmer boyfriend, which resulted in a drama that could contest any teenage love drama. In many ways the locals here are very naïve when it comes to love and relationships. So, to make a long story short, he will never talk to me again, and of course, everything was my fault for not behaving like a good Khmer girl - meaning sitting at home and waiting for my man to further his career until he saw fit to marry me. Then, I ran into this really cool Khmer girl, whom I have mentioned earlier here, Damay. It so turned out that we ... read more

Well, and again there is a holiday. The Khmers love holidays, and will take any opportunities to have one. This is actually the old king's birthday, not the current one, but still it's a three days holiday. Decided to go to Siem Riep for this holiday. Not for Angkor Wat, since I already have seen it, and I only have two days in Siem Riep, but to visit a friend, and get out of PP. PP is starting to get on my nerves. Anyway, the bustour will take six hours, but I have loaded up on books, so hopefully it won't be too painful. I have bought the most expensive ticket, US$6, for a limousine bus, but for those of you which have travelled in Asia before, that can mean so many things. The picture on ... read more
