Happy New Year to friends and family, near and far, old and new. Wishing all a very happy and healthy new year with only good surprises in store for the future. We've enjoyed our 4th year of living in Asia and truly appreciate it. We're thankful for the friends we've met, the experiences we've had and the lifestyle we've grown accustomed to.Nancy's volunteer stint as chairperson for the American Women's Club of Thailand Scholarship Program ended with the annual English Camp weekend in January 2013. Dennis also volunteered and was surprised that he enjoyed the experience. Dennis had a milestone birthday in June and decided to celebrate by treating himself to a Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle. He's fit, feeling strong and loves the bike. Nancy traveled to Vancouver, Boston and Quebec, Canada for a family reunion in July ... read more

It's been a year since we've made the move from Bend to Bangkok. We're enjoying each week which we find still passes too quickly. Just a brief entry to share some photos from the past year. To all our old and new friends and family both near and far, we think of you often and wish you a wonderful Christmas and holiday season and a healthy and happy New Year. A solo trip.... I traveled to northern Thailand for two reasons. First, to volunteer at the annual English Camp weekend in Udon Thani, organized by the American Women's Club (AWC) of Thailand for its' high school girll's Scholarship program. Secondly, I needed to get a new visa from a Thai consulate outside of Thailand. I took the one hour flight from Bangkok to Udon Thani, and then planned to take the International Bus to Vientiane, Laos which is another 70 kms north. Once at the Udon Thani bus station, I noticed that the guy I sat next to on the flight up was also taking the international bus. We started chatting along the route. It turns out that he's originally from Laos and is now an American citizen living in San Diego. He worked with the ... read more

It was time to make another trip out of Thailand to renew our visa and we were intrigued by Myanmar, our neighbor to the just an hours flight from our base in Bangkok. We'd met some friends who've traveled there and highly recommended a visit. It had all the ingredients for a good trip: friendly people, beautiful scenery, multi-ethnic cultures (135 different races) and a wide range of intriguing of cultural and religious sites. We flew Air Asia to Yangon and the new 30 day visa on arrival program worked smoothly, although as of September it is temporarily suspended and must be arranged in advance. We booked our internal air tickets in advance via e-mail with Good News Travels in Yangon. I'd highly recommend him as he can provide a wide range of planning, not only ... read more

Holiday greetings everyone! We're sending our wishes for a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all. Especially at this time of year we miss sharing time with friends and family back in the States. We feel comfortable with our new city and enjoy living here and learning the subtleties of Thai culture. The people are so kind and considerate. We're settled in a one bedroom furnished condo. It's centrally located and a short walk to the skytrain or the subway. We're really enjoying the food. From restaurants, to food courts to the noodle guy on the street, it's all really very good. We're pretty good at getting around the city and we're always finding something to entertain us. Nancy joined the American Women's Club and met some really nice people including one woman who invited ... read more

Has it really been three weeks since we arrived in Bangkok from Cambodia? Once we arrived in Bangkok, it was clear that I had developed a sinus infection. A visit with a ENT surgeon at the internationally known Bumrungrad Hospital confirmed it with an endoscopic exam and also found a deviated septum and polyps. A few days later I had a cat scan and 6 days later I was having surgery on January 24th to remove the polyps. This is not how I had planned on spending our second 30 day visa entry in Thailand. But, considering I've had chronic sinus problems the past ten years, it was time to take corrective action. It's been two weeks since my endoscopic surgery and I can almost smell the jasmine again! No bandages, no pain and a night ... read more

Following our travels from Hoi An, Vietnam, we took the 3 hour train north to the city of Hue. Not only was it originally the imperial city of ancient Vietnam, it was a city under siege for one solid month during the Vietnam War (or, the American War, as it's called here!) The train followed the coastline north winding over a mountain pass to the city. We stayed in a guesthouse run by a local family. The elderly uncle we met one night was previously a language professor at the local university. He thought we were French at first and started conversing with us in French and then switched to English. Among the sites tourists see here are the royal tombs along the Perfume River, a visit to the Citadel, and a trip north to visit ... read more

We arrived in Hanoi on Dec.13th, not knowing what to expect It's the 2nd largest city in Vietnam, and the most furthest north. We stayed in the city not far from lake. Each morning we could hear the loudspeakers playing music for those early risers doing their tai chi exercises by the lakefront. We found a small hotel in the Cathedral section of town, not far from the trendy street where we had our first meal in town. There, we sat near the window, shutters were open to the street, listening to French expats chatting over wine, and we soaked in the sounds of the street over a great pizza. We wandered the streets taking care to cross through the onslaught of traffic, mostly motorbikes and scooters. We chose to eat in places that served French influenced ... read more

We returned from our trip up north to Chiang Mai and arrived just in time to witness the festivities for the King's birthday on December 5th. He's just turned 80 years old. We were out and about and got caught up in the crowd waiting for the motorcade to pass. The crowds were deep on each side of the boulevard waiting for a glimpse of the King and Queen to drive by. We happened to be in the right spot and caught his car drive by. It was genuinely a crush of people on foot and in vehicles out to honor the King. This week we also got our travel shots at the Bangkok hospital. We had a very good consult with a travel medicine doctor. We're on our way to Hanoi tomorrow, and will eventually ... read more

Well, we did it. We finally left Vieques! We had a great flight from Los Angeles direct to Bangkok on Thai Airways; very comfortable seats and attentive service. Having been culturally deprived the last 5 months, we were excited to spend time in Bangkok, welcome the Thai hospitality and start enjoying food again. We haven't been disappointed. We started out each getting medical checkups at two different hospitals. We are very impressed with the quality of care we each received, technology and not to mention the cost differential. Once we settled in, we found it very easy to get around Bangkok with the river ferries, the skytrain, metro and cabs. We usually take the river ferry on the Chao Phraya River for the 20 minute ride to the skytrain. It's the most entertaining ride for .30 ... read more
