Danielle Axline

I'm Danielle, a 21 year old college student in hopes of someday becoming a veterinarian, or an aerospace engineer, or an artist. I still have yet to decide the rotation of my true dreams in life. I'm a facebook addict and spend way too much time mentally fussing over how much I have to do instead of being productive. I love art, long conversations, history, orange juice, blankets with the fan on and bad movies. I hate dishes and I sort my M&Ms by color before I eat them. I have blue eyes and an open mind and despite everything, I think people are really good at heart.

6:10 ROME CIAMPINO GATE CLOSED We sprinted through the doors to security and flung ourselves in the front of the line. Despite the protests of the people behind us, we pushed our way up to the desk. The lady stamped our boarding passes and we raced off across the room to the line for security. For being in England, many people didn't speak English and we sign languaged our way to the front of the security line with arm flaps and multiple points to our watches. Within 30 seconds we were through and racing to Gate 54. With 59 gates total, we dodged people carrying luggage and babies for at least 10 minutes. Barely breathing we made it to the final desk and were literally one of the last three people on the plane. Even with ... read more

Dream on. One and a half hours of sleep later I was up and in the shower preparing for this five day long journey to Firenze and Venezia. The latter being my number one travel destination since I was an itty bitty. At 5am, my brain was running on auto pilot as I went through my daily preparational, not to mention boring, routine. As 5:30 rolled around, I had a skype session with a friend back home. Sometimes it's difficult being on the other side of the world with this hassle of a seven hour time difference. We departed the apartment at 6:15 or so and arrive at the train station to find out that our train number had changed. An interesting venture for frazzled early-morning minds. The two hour ride to Florence was basically ... read more

“Maybe we’re not supposed to be happy. Maybe gratitude has nothing to do with joy. Maybe being grateful means recognizing what you have for what it is. Appreciating small victories. Admiring the struggle it takes simply to be human. Maybe we’re thankful for the familiar things we know. And maybe we’re thankful for the things we’ll never know. At the end of the day, the fact that we have the courage to still be standing is reason enough to celebrate.” I've spent these last few days having heart to hearts with my roommates and it dawned upon me that I'm confused. Never in my life have I ever not known what I want and to tell the truth, it scares the hell out of me. I go back and forth between decisions and ideas, commitments and ... read more

Some people believe that without history, our lives amount to nothing. At some point we all have to choose: do we fall back on what we know, or do we step forward to something new? It's hard not to be haunted by our past. Our history is what shapes us... what guides us. Our history resurfaces time after time after time. So we have to remember sometimes the most important history is the history we’re making today. I woke up to my roommate bursting into my room singing “rise and shine and give God the glory, glory! It's beach time!” I untangled myself from the covers and pushed myself into an upright position. Holy hangover from hell. It wasn't even my 21st the night before and I was still feeling it something fierce. “How's the hangover?” ... read more

A little germ decided to filter its way into our apartment and has been slowly but surely infecting each one of us. Once one person gets better, it makes its way to its next victim and knocks them out. Guess who was next? I was beginning to overheat. The sweltering just-after-sunrise sun in the Roman morning was scalding the back of my neck as we trekked across the city. Not even 9:30am and the temperature had risen to 85 degrees. Stepping into the portico of San Clemente church, I flung myself onto a stone tablet and cooled myself off by taking off my shoes and pressing the soles of my feet into the cool, marble column in front of me. As the art historian began to lecture, my mind wandered as my feet continued to pull ... read more

You’ve got to learn to slow down in life, cause man, the things you’ll miss if you don’t… I had been reading someone's blog and became inspired by this quote. I know that I've been doing so much recently and I feel like I've been doing nothing. Since all of these natural disasters ocurring, I've felt obligated to help out in some way. Just donating a few dollars to a cause isn't enough for me. I want to donate my time, make a difference by doing something bigger than that. Granted I'm good at many things and have a wide range of interests, but there are some drawbacks that go with that also. Yes, I'm good at a lot of things, but there's nothing that I'm absolutely GREAT at. Everyone has their strong points and weak ... read more

It's been two weeks since I've been here. The time is going by so incredibly fast. My drawing study is due on the 17th and I have to have a good chunk of my painting done by the 24th and I'm still working on the study. My 21st birthday then falls on the 28th and the 30th-4th is our trip to Florence/Venice and I think a couple of us are going to try and head up to Switzerland and knock a couple of more things off my bucket list such as canyoning and skydiving. The USA/England football game was today. Got to go to the Scholars Lounge (a student bar here in Rome) and watch the game there. It was so packed, I couldn't move. I ended up meeting some people from Michigan who are studying ... read more

I've done so much over these last couple of days that I don't even know where to start. I've been waking up to the sound of menacing laughing seagulls (honest to God, the creepiest thing I've ever heard). Then getting my fill on Nutella, the best thing ever created. I've eaten so much of that and pizza and gelato. Everything is decently priced and so darn delicious. Yesterday, two of the girls I'm living with and I went "ghost huntin'" at the Colosseum. None of us had seen it yet and to see it at dusk for the first time was one of the prettiest things I had ever seen. I still need to invest in a tripod but I just spent a lot of money at the art store getting my canvas to start my ... read more

Well, I'm finally in Rome! These last couple of days have been amazing. Everyone is so nice and I even have my own room. After getting on the next flight (since I missed my first one), which was nerve wracking, we flew to Rome and passed over the Swiss Alps, which was so incredibly gorgeous. I can't wait to plan my trip there. Unfortunately, on the way to Rome, I managed to lose my glasses case and only pair of contacts, so I'm potentially stuck in glasses the entire summer. I'm not too happy about that. It's so amazing how every corner you walk around and there's some famous piece of architecture just...hangin' out in the middle of all the bustle. All of the little details and textures are just mind blowing. There's a building nearby ... read more
