Stuart & Rhianydd Vietnam 2009 Road Trip

We live in the UK and have travelled fairly extensively...Brazil, China, Malaysia, Thailand, India, Africa, Iceland, USA, Most of Europe.
We are currently in the planning stages/lead up to a road trip from North to South in Vietnam...arriving in Hanoi on the 23/3/09.
Plan is to buy a motorbike in Hanoi and take 3/4 weeks to get down to Saigon, then on to the Mekong Delta and finally end up on Phu Quoc island for a couple of weeks rest and recuperation...

We had a choice....... We could have stayed in the backpacker area and found a place for less than $15 US.....We could have gone to Cholon, the chinese quarter, and found a mini hotel for around $30 US or we could have found a business hotel in District 3 for around $70 US.........Or for only a bit more we found we could stay in the gorgeous, historical, colonial splendour of "The Grand", 2 minutes from Lam Son square, smack dab in the middle of everything....! Buckets of atmosphere, swimming pool, bus-boys in gold braid, hot and cold running masseuses, breakfasts that could sink a ship.....Well, what would you do? We reached for the plastic! Saigon was not what we expected...Everything we had read and everyone we had talked to gave us the impression that it was going ... read more

So...Long time no blog! Dont get me wrong, I'm not apologising, it was always the plan to tell you about our stay on Phu Quoc island either just before or just after we had left for the final part of our trip in Saigon.... But, with the power of hindsight I probably should have done the blog in stages. It now seems a bit of a daunting prospect to catch up with everything we have seen and done since my last update.....Still, no-one likes a shirker! Here we go...... Both of the places we stayed on the island were directly on the beach, south of Duong Dong town, the islands biggest community which lies on the west coast....The island is right at the early stages of what are obviously going to be some very major changes...Though ... read more

After a great nights sleep at the Lang Du (apart from Rhianydd being woken at one point by a small lizard gazing adoringly up at her from her pillow),we loaded the bike for the hundred yards ride to the Super Dong.... where... we promptly unloaded it again, as the dockers said it was too heavy to go up the plank to the deck of the hydrofoil..this might sound like a trifle but in 90 odd degrees in full bike gear a 10 minute load operation tends to become a bit of a headache...Still never mind we've got a couple of weeks on Phu Quoc to recover!! The dockers stiffed us a little for loading the bike onto the ferry but given how much bigger it is than all the little Hondas they usually deal with we ... read more

The ride from Vinh Long to Can Tho was virtually over before it began...Just 37 kms on sealed roads. The only slight problem being that the bridge linking the two river island provinces collapsed a short while ago (killing 67 people we were laughingly informed by Ho Chi Minh Diamond, see last blog)..Consequently we had to take a ferry across the river just east of Can Tho...Typical vietnamese chaotic efficiency, which I know sounds like a contradiction in terms,...method is to ride directly up to a narrow access ticket booth, bottle necking with hundreds of other bikes, buy the ticket and again bottle neck further into a holding bay about the size of a tennis court, capacity 250 or so bikes, which has rolling steel frame gates..Every 15 minutes these gates roll back revealing an opening ... read more

So today we give "Poppy" our much maligned but much loved Minsk motorbike a rest.....We have found a boatman to take us all the way upstream to Vinh Long...The girl who arranged it for us says it should take around five hours which is longer than it would be by bike but this way we can kick back and relax all the way and enjoy seeing life on the Mekong river... We had arranged to meet the girl at 8.30 in Ben tre town and follow her to where we were to pick up the boat. We suited up for the ride in the normal way; Big European helmets/mohawks/safety pads/armoured jackets/gloves/face masks and shades, Dennis Hopper eat your heart out..Our guide (all four foot eleven of her) was wearing elbow length flesh coloured satin gloves, lime ... read more

One of the longest rides to date...Plans were to stop at Ho Coc about 230 kms from Ca Na but after a breathtaking cross country ride east to the coast and then some of the best coastal scenery to date as we headed south to get to Ho Coc we were somewhat underwhelmed with the acommodation options...There was an "eco Resort" that looked like a UK garden centre and a tired looking resort geared totally to Vietnamese tourists that was like a collection of school bicycle sheds full of hundreds of deckchairs set at right angles to the beach...Strange!... Consequently we pressed on to Vung Tao another 70 odd kms further on and directly south of Ho Chi Minh City where we stayed in a central hotel called Petro House..Vung Tao is busy, full of expats ... read more

Ride from Quy Nhon to Doc Lech was another biggie..just over 200 kms and with the combination of rough and broken tracks masquerading as highway and a heavily weighed down bike we were only averaging 35 kms an hour..High point of the ride was a cliffside mountain pass separating the mainland from the Hon Gom peninsula..Breathtaking scenery and exciting biking with both sweeping and tight curves on switchback roads...However turned one sharp corner on the descent to find a small tour bus on its side with a lorry sat on its back seats, a couple of guys transferring the lorrys load to another vehicle..Couldnt tell how long ago the accident had happened but the road was still covered in oil which slowed us down for the rest of the steep road back down to sea level. ... read more

We both woke in Hoi An feeling better than we thought possible after a great nights sleep...The evening before we had eaten at a French/Vietnamese restaurant "Cafe des Amis" where the food was fantastic (no menu you just get what your given), and the soundtrack of French "Chansons" by the likes of Gresseur and Jaques Brel (three different versions of Port of Amsterdam in less than 2 hours), wonderful if slightly surreal, given the restaurants location on Hoi Ans lantern hung water-front. The owner, Mr Kim, who according to his card has "cooked at many exhibitions in Europe!" is inordinatley proud of his visitors book which he whips out as soon as you sit..A read through the glowing reports in virtually all and any languages you can think of was fun while we waited for the ... read more

Please note..Because I am doing some of these posts historically they are out of order ...Thats why this has a "Post 6" suffix....Confused??You will be! Today we intended to take a fairly easy ride from Hue to China Beach just South of Dan Nang, taking in The Hai Van pass on the way....Intentions are one thing!! From virtually the moment we woke it was obvious that the Gods were not going to be smiling on us... I could easily wax quite lyrical about this particular day but instead I am just going to deal with it in list form...That way I should be able to stay objective and not find myself bursting into tears as I remember the way it progressed..So please bear with me! -We pack and realise we have lost the "master" wallet...credit cards, ... read more

So we're as far South as Hue..The ride down from Dong Hoi was a hard one even though only just over 150 K and the last stretch through yet another torrential downpour left us both feeling like a piece of chewed meat..Thank the lord we bought good waterproof gear! The Morin Hotel is absolutely fantastic and if you feel like a bit of a splurge when you get to Hue well worth the 75$ US we paid..(bargain hard!... Advertised prices are 150-200$) We chilled by the pool for the remains of the afternoon (Sunshine!!Hurray!!)and then headed out for a meal at Meditteraneo about 200 metres along the waterfront where we ate good italian food underneath tarpaulins weighed down by the heaviest rain yet....
