It was a fairly easy and short (only 3.5 hours) bus ride from Quito to Banos, minus a small lapse in judgment to drink too much water and attempt to use the bathroom. The bathrooms on the buses in Ecuador are labeled "Women Only" (in spanish of course) which cracks me up. I think all three of us girls decided we had to go at probably the worst time on the whole trip. It was a dirt side rode, extremely bumpy, try to imagine having to hold onto a handle the entire time you are in the bathroom. Not Easy. Especially when you cant sit down either. Anyways, you get the picture. Ladies (and gentleman - because you have no options) just hold it. The bus station in Banos was pretty small and it was easy ... read more

The trip to Quito from Cuenca was uneventful but it was a treat to have a flight instead of a 10 hour bus ride. I was given the advice to sit on the right side of the plane to get a better view of the volcanoes on the way. It really was a beautiful view and I saw no less than 5 volcanoes including the famous Cotopaxi that I was able to get some fabulous close up photos of from my window. The Quito airport was fairly small and easy to navigate and it was a quick process to grab a cab outside the front door. As was told in most guidebooks it was a $6 cab ride to the New City. We had pre-booked a room at the Travelers Inn (formally Amazon) and so I ... read more

After my bus breaking down an unexpected 12 extra hours in Mancora, I finally took a tuk tuk to the bus “station”. I asked a couple of times when we arrived at a roadside store with a CIFA sign outside if this was in fact the bus station…to which the cab driver replied, of course. So I took his word for it, got my stuff and parked on the curb in front of this random store. Soon enough though, more gringos started to show up with the same confused look on their face. I figured we probably had to be in the right place or we were going to be in big trouble. At least we would have each other. I made friends with a guy from Oregon and a couple from Sydney as we waited ... read more

South America » Peru » Piura » Máncora June 18th 2010

Well, its been a wonderful few days here in the tiny beach town of Mancora in the north of Peru. I wanted sun and warmth, and boy did I get it. The overnight bus from Trujillo to Piura was uneventful, and I arrived a little sleepy in Piura around 5:30 in the morning. I asked the lady pretty dazed where the EPPO bus terminal was (this is supposedly the most safe bus up to this area) and she told me only a few blocks away. It was dark outside and I considered waiting to walk to the other terminal but ran into a nice girl from Scotland who suggested we walk together. Once again, my mantra, everything seems to work out when it needs to. The bus ride to Mancora was fairly long, about 4 hours ... read more

I was happy to head out from Lima after a couple of days since the weather was really starting to get bad. It was pretty misty and chilly so it made it less appealing to get out and explore the city. I did enjoy my time in the city though, it has some really beautiful buildings and intriguing history. The last day though, I was thrilled to get to the Cruz del Sur bus station to head up to Trujillo for a couple of days. At this point, I am getting pretty used to overnight bus travel down here. The Cama seats are really comfortable and big, like flying first class but on the bus. The Cruz del Sur bus station in Lima is pretty impressive, a huge building with different doors for departure that the ... read more

South America » Argentina » Mendoza » Mendoza June 6th 2010

So this blog will have to suffice to my two different adventures to Mendoza, since I was unable to write last trip because of earthquake madness. So, anyways, needless to say I have no see two different sides of Mendoza: The Flashpacker Version and the Upscale Traveler Version. So maybe a quick summary of flashpacker version to start: Rita and I went to Mendoza back in February at the tail end of our month long circle around Chile and Argentina. We were limited to just one full day in the city which was depressing since we discovered after arriving that there really was so much to do. We went ahead to the tourist offices and found some private tour companies but decided that we would just do the bike tour the next day in Maipu. There ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco June 2nd 2010

So this is the first moment in the last 5 days that I have even had a moment to think, and go figure I’m on a plane headed south. It’s been a whirlwind since I left Austin less than a week ago. I was lucky, or cursed, to have enough points to purchase a business class ticket down to Peru along with the rest of my family. This was my first time to fly in the fancy seats, and I fear that I am spoiled from now on. I flew from Austin to Chicago to Miami and finally to Lima, meeting my family in Miami for the last leg. It took me the first two flights to figure out all the fun details like how to make the seat move around and not to be excited ... read more

South America » Chile March 9th 2010

I am writing this blog from the comfort of my home in Austin. I am still trying to grasp everything that has happened in the last week. I thought as part of this process, I could fill you in on my adventure, post earthquake. I left off when I arrived in Pucon. I was very happy to see my friend Chris and quickly made a new friend, Maria, who was traveling alone and staying in my dorm room at the hostel. I spent most of Sunday walking around with Chris, trying to get information and figure out what the next step would be. There wasn't much info on the roads and the bus systems were down, so they weren't giving out any information either - not that they had any. We dropped by the local Municipal ... read more

South America » Chile February 28th 2010

Well, I have steady internet connection again, so I thought I would shoot a short update about what occurred here in Chile yesterday. I was in Santiago after our long trip around Chile and Argentina and had planned to come down to Valdivia Chile, via Pucon, to meet up with some friends that I had met before that were attending a festival there. So I booked a Cama Seat (bed seat) on the 10:50 pm bus on Friday night, overnight arriving at 9 am on Saturday morning in Pucon. The exact bus I took a month ago when I started my trip. I had planned to meet my friend Chris in Pucon and then head directly to Valdivia for the meeting. We left Santiago on time and had an uneventful first four hours. I fell asleep ... read more
